Cultural Capital

Cultural capital refers to the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours that individuals possess that give them an advantage in social and cultural settings. It’s essentially a form of “cultural currency” that helps individuals navigate different social groups and achieve success.

We feel that embedding cultural capital opportunities within school is vitally important as it:

  • Prepares pupils for life beyond school
  • Promotes equality of opportunity
  • Enriches our curriculum and school life

We carefully weave our offering into our curriculum by integrating through lessons; for example:

  • English: Studying a diverse range of authors, including local writers and texts exploring different cultures.
  • History: Exploring both British and world history, including local Wirral heritage.
  • Science: Highlighting scientists from a range of backgrounds and discussing the impact of science in everyday life.

We are passionate about providing opportunity for educational visits & extra curricular activities to all students, allowing a broader view of the world to be gained. For example:

Trips and Visits:

  • Visits to museums and galleries
  • University taster days
  • Local business/industry workshops
  • Visits overseas

Clubs & Societies:

  • Dance club (exploring different world music)
  • STEM club
  • Creative writing workshops

We continually explore means of providing information and inspiration to our students through:

  • Assemblies: Celebrating cultural events such as Black History Month and Pride.
  • Guest Speakers: Inviting alumni and professionals to share experiences.
  • Service Projects: Pupils volunteering in the Wirral community, supporting local causes.

It is important that we meet desired and intended outcomes for our cultural capital streams. In order to measure the effectiveness we gather information from various stakeholders which allows informed decisions to be made each year on content, delivery and approach. We gather information by:

  • Pupil voice surveys on enrichment activities and curriculum content
  • Tracking participation in clubs, trips, and events
  • Feedback from parents, carers, and the local community
