Design Technology (Key Stage 4)

Year 10

Focus

AutumnSpringSummer
Natural and manufactured timber

Students will explore the characteristics and uses of natural and manufactured timbers, including their properties, advantages, and applications in various industries, and will be able to compare and contrast these two categories of timber.

Students will learn the fundamental processes involved in making timber products, including selecting appropriate materials, understanding the tools and techniques needed for woodworking, and applying safety measures during the construction process
The impact of new and emerging technologies

Students will learn the principles of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM), including how to create a digital design using CAD software and the process of turning that design into a physical product using CAM technology.

Students will learn how to operate a laser cutter and a 3D printer, including the safety protocols, design principles, and the process of turning their digital designs into physical products, while understanding the applications of these tools in various fields.
Developments in modern and smart materials

Students will explore recent developments in modern and smart materials, composite materials, and technical textiles, understanding their properties, applications, and benefits in various industries, and will be able to discuss how these materials are transforming technology and design.

Design Principles

Students will explore various drawing techniques and design principles, practise creating different types of sketches, and develop their ability to communicate ideas visually through their drawings and prototyping.

NEA Launched May

Students will learn to differentiate between primary and secondary research methods, understand the advantages and disadvantages of each, and be able to conduct both types of research on a chosen topic (set by the exam board) selecting a final chosen project.

Year 11

Focus

AutumnSpringSummer
NEA: Design Brief and Specification

Students will complete a design brief outlining the requirements for a project and will develop a detailed specification that includes materials, dimensions, and functional requirements for their design.

NEA: Concept Design and Design Development Including Prototyping

Students will learn the principles of concept design and design development, including the process of prototyping. They will be able to create their own design brief, develop a range of prototypes based on their ideas, and evaluate the effectiveness of their prototype in meeting the design specifications. Student will show clear design iteration.

NEA: Final Make

Students will create a high-quality working prototype of a specified product using appropriate materials and techniques, while demonstrating their ability to apply design principles, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork throughout the process.

Exam Content

There will be one exam lesson over the 2 weeks, an exam question will be set after this lesson to test knowledge and develop exam practice skills.
NEA: Final Make

Students will create a high-quality working prototype of a specified product using appropriate materials and techniques, while demonstrating their ability to apply design principles, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork throughout the process.

NEA: Evaluation

Students will complete a detailed evaluation of a product by gathering feedback from the target market, analysing this feedback, and suggesting appropriate design modifications to improve the product.

NEA Submission – 28th February

Exam Content

All lesson post NEA submission will be theory and exam practice lessons. Exam practice or revision task will be set weekly.
