| Religion and Ethics: Christianity Christian Beliefs In this section students will study the key beliefs and concepts of the Christian faith. They will examine some of the different approaches taken by the main Christian denominations which includes: * The Trinity * Creation * The Incarnation * The last days of Jesus’ life * Salvation * Christian Eschatology * Problem of evil/suffering * Solutions to problem of evil/suffering Living the Christian Life In this section students will study how the Christian faith affects a believer’s life. They will examine some of the key practices of different Christian denominations, which includes: * Christian worship * The role of the sacraments * Prayer * Pilgrimage * Christian religious celebrations * The role of the local church * The future of the worldwide Church | Marriage and the Family In this section students will study the importance of marriage and family in the Christian faith. They will examine different Christian denomination’s beliefs about key elements of this topic which includes: * Marriage * Sexual relationships * Contraception * Importance of the family * Men and women in the family * Families in the local parish * Divorce * Gender prejudice and discrimination Matters of Life and Death In this section students will study issues that relate to the beginning and end of life. They will examine the morality of certain issues and the different Christian denomination’s teachings on these issues, including: * Origins and value of the universe * Sanctity of life * Origins and value of human life * Abortion * Death and the afterlife * Non-religious arguments against life after death * Euthanasia * The natural world | Recap and Review Students will review Unit 1 and engage in effective revision of the unit and exam technique and practice to consolidate their knowledge and understanding and to develop their skills of analysis and evaluation of different aspects of the Christian faith. Islam: Religion, Peace and Conflict Muslim Beliefs In this section students will study the key beliefs and concepts of the Muslim faith. They will examine these beliefs within the different traditions of Shi’a and Sunni Islam, including: * The six beliefs of Islam * The five roots of ‘Usul ad-Din * The nature of Allah |

They will examine some of the key practices of Shi’a and Sunni Islam, including: * Ten Obligatory Acts of Islam * Shahadah * Salah * Sawm * Zakah and Khums * Hajj * Jihad * Celebrations and commemorations Peace and Conflict in Islam In this section students will study issues surrounding peace and conflict and how followers of the Muslim faith respond to these issues, including: * Muslim attitudes towards peace * Peacemaking | Peace and Conflict in Islam continued * Muslims attitudes to conflict * Pacifism * Just War theory * Holy War * Weapons of mass destruction Crime and Punishment In this section students will study key concepts and issues surrounding crime and punishment and how followers of the Muslim faith respond to these issues, including: * Justice * Crime * Good, evil and suffering * Punishment and capital punishment * Aims of punishment * Forgiveness * Treatment of criminals | Recap and Review Students will review Area of Study 2 and engage in effective revision of the unit and exam technique and practice to consolidate their knowledge and understanding and to develop their skills of analysis and evaluation of different aspects of the Christian faith. |
